Who are we ?

Shore Marbled Papers was born out of a love for the beautiful art of paper marbling.

After attending a course I fell in love with the craft and started experimenting with different designs and colours, creating both traditional and modern patterns including patterns such as Turkish stone, Snail, Gelgit and Nonpareil.

Each paper is hand marbled in our studio by the sea, in the coastal Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex, England.

All our marbled papers are created using artist quality acrylic paint and materials, and printed on 120gsm paper.

What is Marbling?

Marbling is an ancient art dating back to the twelfth century in Japan, in the form of suminagashi, where ink was floated on water.

Using similar traditional techniques today each pattern designed is completely unique. First a tray of carrageenan ‘size’ is prepared, water thickened with seaweed, and different coloured paints are dropped with brushes or pipettes onto the size. Spreading over the size, each paint dropped displaces the previous colour pushing them into thin veins.

Once the paint has been dropped intricate patterns can then be created using various techniques, mainly with combs or a stylus.

After creating the pattern, a sheet of paper can be gently placed onto the surface of the liquid and the pattern transferred onto it.

The paper is then hung to dry revealing the beautiful marbled design.

Marbling has many uses; bookbinding, stationary, lampshades & art to name a few!

Today Marbling is classified as an ‘Endangered’ on the Heritage Crafts Red List.
